Liposuction is a surgery commonly performed around the world. However, its fame and effectiveness in people’s bodies have created myths about the treatment.
Let’s review the myths & facts of liposuction:
1. “The results of liposuction are permanent.”
True! The results are for life if all the indications of our specialized surgeon are followed. On the other hand, leading a healthy lifestyle, exercising, and eating healthily, can greatly benefit the results of the treatment.
2. “Liposuction is a weight loss surgery.”
False. The goal of liposuction is to remove an accumulation of fat in certain parts of the body. It is a cosmetic procedure performed by a specialist surgeon in order to obtain a more aesthetically pleasing and balanced body.
In other words, liposuction is for removing fat, but not for losing weight.
3. “Thanks to liposuction eliminates cellulite.”
False. Liposuction can improve the texture of the skin by eliminating fatty tissue in a certain way. Importantly, it is not the way to get rid of cellulite.
4. “The extracted fat can be used to fill other parts of the body.”
True. Actually, fat transfer is an intervention performed by many of our patients, especially women. The most common areas to apply fat transfer are the breasts and buttocks. The goal is to have a slimmer, more aesthetic, and balanced body.
5. “Liposuction leaves huge and long scars on the body.”
This is absolutely false. Although it does leave scars, with strict follow-up and adhering to the indications of our specialist, with time the scars will disappear. It is true that in the first days there is inflammation, which is normal and to be expected. Don’t worry, the scars will quickly disappear.
6. “Liposuction is only for women.”
Also false. Most of us know that the accumulation of fat between men and women is distributed differently. In the case of women, they are more likely to accumulate higher amounts of fat.
This does not prevent men from having this surgical procedure. Actually, the most common area in men is the abdomen, and the results are more noticeable 3 months after the surgery.
