Mandibular implants, or jaw augmentation, is a surgery to improve the size, shape, or contour of the lower jaw. These implants help create a more balanced facial appearance.
The main purpose of mandibular implants is cosmetic. Our specialized doctor, Dr. Alejandro Cornejo, performs this treatment in our San Isidro clinic.
Key Points – Who Needs Mandibular Implants?
Mandibular implants are for people with a weak or underdeveloped lower jaw. They are ideal for those with facial asymmetry or an unbalanced profile.
Types of Mandibular Implants
Mandibular implants come in various shapes, sizes, and materials. Common materials include silicone, porous polyethylene, and titanium.
Surgical Procedure
The surgery is usually done under general anesthesia. Dr. Cornejo makes an incision inside the mouth or under the chin to access the jaw. The chosen implant is then carefully placed and secured with screws or other methods. The incision is closed with sutures and dressings may be applied.
Recovery and Results
After surgery, expect some swelling, bruising, and discomfort. Pain can be managed with prescribed painkillers and cold packs. A soft or liquid diet is recommended for a few days. Follow oral hygiene instructions to prevent infection.
Full recovery can take several weeks, during which normal activities and strenuous exercise should be avoided.
Final results become visible as swelling decreases, revealing a more proportionate and aesthetically pleasing lower jaw.
Other Options
In some cases, mandibular implants can be combined with other procedures for optimal results. These include jaw surgery, chin surgery, or facial fat grafting. These can be done simultaneously to address additional aesthetic or skeletal issues.
