What Happens During a Buttock Augmentation Procedure?

Let’s break down the steps involved so you know what to expect.

1️⃣ Anesthesia

To keep you comfortable throughout the procedure, anesthesia is required. You’ll typically receive either:

• Intravenous (IV) sedation, or

• General anesthesia

Your surgeon will help you decide on the safest and most effective option based on your individual case.

2️⃣ The Incision

The next step depends on the type of augmentation:

➡️ If you’re getting implants:
An incision will be made, often in the crease between the buttocks or other discreet areas. The exact location will be chosen carefully based on the implant size and your anatomy.

➡️ If you’re having fat grafting (BBL):
No incisions are made on the buttocks themselves. Instead, fat is harvested via liposuction from other parts of your body (like the abdomen or thighs) and then injected into the buttocks to create a fuller shape.

3️⃣ The Augmentation Process

Now comes the main part of the procedure — the actual augmentation.

➡️ If you’re getting implants:
A special silicone implant is designed specifically for the buttocks. These aren’t the same as breast implants — they’re firmer and shaped to match your natural anatomy.
The method used to insert and position the implant will vary depending on:

☑️ The type and size of implant
☑️ How much enhancement you want
☑️ Your body shape and proportions
☑️ Your surgeon’s recommendations after your evaluation

➡️ If you’re having fat transfer (Brazilian Butt Lift):
The process starts with liposuction. Fat is gently removed from areas where you have extra, like your abdomen, flanks, or thighs.
Next, the fat is purified and loaded into syringes, which are connected to a small, specialized cannula. The surgeon then carefully injects the fat into multiple areas of your buttocks to create a smooth, natural-looking enhancement.

This method uses your own fat, so it not only enhances your behind, but also slims down other areas; a two-in-one contouring benefit!

4️⃣ Closing the Incisions

Once the implants are in place or the fat has been injected, it’s time to close everything up.

✅ If incisions were made (in the case of implants), they are carefully closed in layers:

• Deep sutures help secure the tissue

• The outer skin is closed with stitches, surgical tape, or skin adhesive, depending on your case

These closure techniques are designed to minimize visible scarring and promote smooth healing.

5️⃣ The Results — What to Expect

✨ The results of your buttock augmentation are visible right away. You’ll notice a fuller, more sculpted shape as soon as the procedure is done.

However, it’s important to understand that:

➡️ With implants, you’ll still experience some swelling in the first few weeks — but your enhanced shape will be noticeable from day one. Over time, swelling fades and your incision lines soften.

➡️ With fat transfer, your final results take a little longer. That’s because your body needs time to accept and integrate the transferred fat. It’s normal for some of the fat to be reabsorbed in the first few months, so what you see immediately after surgery isn’t quite the final result.

✅ In both cases, the results look and feel natural — and when done correctly, can last for many years.
