A breast explant is a treatment in which both breast prostheses are removed. It is performed on patients who have previously undergone augmentation mammoplasty and who no longer wish to replace them with other implants.
Breast explant surgery is a relatively straightforward procedure. It is performed under general anesthesia. A small incision is made and one of our specialists will then remove your implants.
Mostly, the incisions are made in the same location as when your breast implants were inserted so we minimize scarring.
What happens when breast implants are removed?
If it is a recent breast augmentation treatment, then the prostheses can be removed through the same incision through which they were inserted into the breast. The breasts can even recover their original appearance.
On the other hand, if the augmentation surgery was several years ago, then when the implants are removed, the breasts will droop due to skin distension.
Why is a Breast Explant performed?
There are many reasons for a woman having undergoing augmentation mammoplasty to decide to seek a surgeon to remove the silicone implants.
The reasons for performing a breast explant can be multiple but we will highlight the most frequent:
- Bigger is not always better, especially as we age. There is the possibility that the woman wishes, after the years and with advancing age, to remove the implants. She can opt for smaller ones, or be without a prosthesis.
- The fear of carrying a foreign body that could cause breast disease in the future. It is not justified. Silicone implants are absolutely harmless, as proven by their use over many years.
- False expectations. It is the consequence of the deterioration produced in the breasts by the passage of time. It may be due to pregnancy, lactation or significant weight loss.

Breast Explant: To Take into Account
This surgery will reduce the volume of the breast. Therefore, it would be appropriate to consider combining it with other procedures, such as mastopexy. Mastopexy is the lifting of the breasts, remove excess skin and create renewed firmness in breasts that have lost volume.
